The Department of Business and Trade (DBT) at the British High Commissioner Dar es Salaam, is looking for a dynamic, experienced, and highly motivated individual to join our team as Trade Adviser. DBT is the Trade and Investment Promotion organisation for the UK. Our main mandate is to increase UK export to Tanzania through trade and investment.

This is an exciting time to join DBT as Trade Adviser. The UK is the 2nd leading FDI in Tanzania where the economic and commercial relationship between the UK and Tanzania continues to strengthen considerably. Of recent, there has been significant increase in UK trade and investment in sectors as diverse as mining, infrastructure, and energy.

We have delivered two successful UK-TZ Business forums over the past two years and are looking to closing more opportunities before and during the upcoming Africa Investment Summit in the UK in April 2024.

The jobholder will be responsible for helping UK companies to win business in Tanzania and support the delivery of the DBT Tanzania implementation plan and the DBT Regional Trade Plan.

The job holder will be expected to manage client/business relationships to ensure the highest standards of satisfaction. They will also have specific responsibility for leading the agriculture sector, developing and delivering on new opportunities in these specific sectors.

Roles and responsibilities:

Reporting to the DBT Country Director for Tanzania, the successful candidate will help identify and deliver on opportunities for both new and existing UK business. The adviser will specifically lead on the agriculture sector. For these specific sectors the job holder will also report to DBT sector directors for Africa.

The role will entail maintaining a network of operational level contacts across government and private sector; processing and sharing information with internal and external stakeholders; monitoring wider sector opportunities; and proactively contacting UK businesses, ensuring an excellent quality service is provided to them.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Deliver front line business facing work, growing UK exports and investment to/in Tanzania. Be a sector lead for the agriculture sector, while supporting team on other priority sectors in market – infrastructure, mining and energy. The sector priorities may change as commercial priorities evolve
  • Identify and generate commercial opportunities and provide professional advice to UK companies and facilitate introductions and providing the other support required for companies to win contracts
  • Produce good quality and detailed briefs providing market insights and sector- or product-specific information and analysis to UK companies and UK delegates, when necessary
  • Develop a plan and prioritise for leading sectors and areas of opportunities for UK firms
  • Engage with various Government departments, agencies, companies and other organisations, at all levels, to ensure maximum co-operation and understanding of their current needs and aspirations, engaging credibly to build strong and meaningful relationships with stakeholders and clients in the UK and Tanzania
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the DBT Africa network and DBT HQ to maximise opportunities, increase the impact of inward missions and other visits from the UK. This includes reporting and sharing feedback with DBT Africa sector directors for agriculture sectors
  • Use the various DBT databases and platforms to ensure good recording and reporting of in-country interactions and activities undertaken by the country team working on trade and investment in order to maintain up-to-date and accurate client information
  • Assist in planning and running Ministerial and VIP visits and trade missions from the UK to Tanzania, including planning programmes and logistics
  • Support the DBT Country Director in preparing trade briefings, trade statistics, and pipeline of opportunities to include in annual business planning
  • Promote the UK export and investment offer to the Tanzania market, including UK financial institutions such as BII and UK Export Finance
  • Attend appropriate functions/events/meetings aimed to build a network of contacts across government and the private sector and identify business opportunities at the earliest stage
  • Assist in planning and running trade missions comprising British businesses to Tanzania
  • Contribute flexibly and fully to the work of the high commission as a whole to ensure collaborative, joined up working, including to upholding the brand and reputation of UK with its diverse interlocutors

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Relevant postgraduate degree and/or undergraduate degree and other professional qualification
  • At least three years relevant professional experience. Experience of trade and/or investment work, with good networking skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain contacts to deliver progress around business requests
  • You will need to be a self-starter with good sense of initiative and strong communication skills
  • Excellent drafting skills in English and fluent written and spoken English and Swahili
  • Be highly motivated, a keen problem solver, show strong organisational skills and be resourceful as a dependable team player.
  • Demonstrate strong work ethic, ability to work amid tight deadlines and good professional judgment

    Language requirements:

  • Language: English, Swahili
  • Level of language required: Fluent (Written and spoken)

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Client facing experience, for example with a professional services business (managing businesses, understanding issues and pursuing strategies together)
  • Experience working on the frontier between public and private sector (engaging with stakeholders on both sides to deliver business outcomes)
  • Specific sector experience
  • Experience working or engaging with the Tanzania Government and evidence of good knowledge of public sector decision-making processes
  • Knowledge or experience of the UK and/or British businesses
