Job description

The Mbale Clinical Research Institute (MCRI) is a center of excellence in evidencebased clinical research, training, and innovation located in Eastern Uganda at the Mbale
Regional Referral Hospital complex. MCRI is dedicated to progressive research collaborations
with esteemed institutions, including Busitema University, Imperial College London, and
EDCTP. We are now seeking a motivated and experienced individual to fill the position of Trial
Medical Officer for the SMAART-MAP trial focusing on malaria in children.
Job Summary: The Trial Medical Officer (TMO) will be critical in the successful execution of
the SMAART-MAP trial. This role encompasses screening and enrolling study participants,
ensuring accurate data collection, managing adverse events, and overseeing participant followup. A solid understanding of clinical research protocols, regulatory compliance, and medical
assessments is essential. The TMO will work closely with the research team, principal
investigators, and clinical staff to ensure the trial adheres to Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Participant Screening & Enrollment:
• Conduct medical assessments and screenings to determine the eligibility of study
participants.
• Obtain informed consent, ensuring participants understand the trial’s nature and
associated risks.
• Collaborate with clinical research coordinators to ensure efficient and ethical enrollment.
2. Data Collection & Management:
• Ensure accurate and timely collection of clinical data and completion of Case Report
Forms (CRFs).
• Review source documents for consistency and resolve discrepancies.
• Conduct quality control checks to ensure data accuracy and compliance.
3. Adverse Event Management:
• Monitor participants for adverse events, assess severity, and document in compliance
with regulatory requirements.
• Report serious adverse events to regulatory authorities within specified timelines.
4. Participant Follow-Up:
• Manage scheduled follow-ups to assess participants’ health and adherence to trial
protocols.
• Conduct home visits and address any medical emergencies encountered by study
participants.
5. Collaboration & Compliance:
• Work alongside multidisciplinary teams, providing clinical expertise and guidance.
• Ensure trial activities comply with local regulatory requirements and institutional
policies.
• Participate in audits and monitoring visits as required.
6. Documentation & Reporting:
• Maintain accurate medical records and support the submission of regulatory
documentation.
• Prepare study progress reports in conjunction with the study coordinator.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from a recognized university.
• Current licensure to practice medicine by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners
Council.
• Training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subject Protection (HSP).
Experience:
• Minimum of 1-2 years of medical practice experience, with preferred experience in
clinical research.

Skills:
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in
a multidisciplinary environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Skilled in applying clinical medicine principles and procedures in evaluating and treating
patients.
Person Specifications:
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional conduct.
• Flexibility and resilience in managing stress effectively.
