The Deel data team has grown rapidly over the last 2 years to support the business that was (and is) experiencing hypergrowth. The team structure has been somewhat decentralized, with independent teams able to deliver data insights and tooling for each of their vertical stakeholders. We are now building a data platform team to drive data quality, reliability, and consistency across our stack, and to increase the overall data team velocity, whilst enabling more sophistication in the day-to-day work. In this role, you’ll be leading these efforts.
Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a mixed group of high-performing data engineers and analytics engineers.
- Build a strong technical and operational strategy and the roadmap for evolving Deel’s Data Platform as a whole.
- Lead by example on technical matters and drive appropriate decisions at technical level
- Mentor, coach and grow your team members, also into leadership positions if the opportunity arises
- Set a vision for our long-term data modeling architecture, driving efficiency, consistency, reusability empowering data team members and all employees using data in their day-to-day
- Manage ELT lifecycle: introducing, backfilling, evolving, and deprecating data sources, always aiming to get closer to real-time. We built our framework in-house on top of Airflow and Fivetran.
- Manage code lifecycle: from local development through production via CI (via GitHub) and Looker (via LookML), until a change is deployed in staging and eventually production environments.
- Drive data quality through monitoring and observability tooling. Creating strong relationships with upstream data creators like software engineering and sales ops.
- Manage and improve our CI/CD pipeline and processes
- Manage performance and cost-efficiency of our data cloud platform. We use Snowflake.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of experience in data engineering roles, of which at least 4 in a management role
- You love working with teams, empowering talented people to deliver their best work and to develop their careers
- Multiple years experience working on cloud data architecture (preferably snowflake)
- You are an excellent communicator able to explain complex technical topics with clarity over a wide range of audiences.
- You have a good understanding of Data Architecture and Engineering principles and practices
- Our stack is built with Python and SQL. Fluency in both is expected.
We’d especially love to speak with you if:
- Experience with building data security and privacy tooling
- Experience building data model architectures in dbt
- You have experience in large system migrations and new data integrations
- Container orchestration (Kubernetes)
- Expertise managing orchestration tooling (e.g. Airflow, Dagster) – experience with distributed job schedules
- Experience working in fast-growing, highly proactive product-oriented organizations
