Your duties will include but not limited to the following:
- Anticipate and keep management up to date on material regional tax legislation and reform proposals and the potential impacts for Barrick in Zambia.
- Ensure all tax returns are filed on time.
- Assist both the Corporate Tax Group in Toronto, the Regional CFO, Country Manager and legal counsel in the Region with ongoing tax compliance, tax planning, tax reporting, tax audits and budgeting/forecasting/LOM tax projections in Zambia.
- Work closely with the Toronto Treasury team on cross-functional initiatives.
- Work effectively with the Strategic Matters and Legal Departments and the Corporate Tax Department in Toronto/AME in tax research, tax planning, tax due diligence and tax analysis on potential mergers, acquisitions, restructurings, joint ventures and divestitures and exploration activity implications for tax.
- Regularly engage Revenue Authority to ensure relationships are maintained and disputes are resolved.
- Assist to close out long outstanding disputes with Government and unwind legacy tax assets.
- Support LMC in government negotiations on a number of topics prior to the expansion project (or that may arise from time to time) but having experience in multi-facility economic zone negotiations would be advantageous, as well as experience in ensuring tax assets such as VAT are maintained at a minimum level.
- Ensure effective engagements with supply chain teams, suppliers, and any other relevant regional teams to assist in reviewing contracts and advising on tax clauses that mitigate risk but also provide tax planning opportunities/ value-adding initiatives to ensure we make effective use of Double Taxation relief or other structuring benefits where possible.
- Ensure tax exposures during the expansion of LMC are managed appropriately to ensure no fines for non-compliance is found down the line through future audits or self-assessment reviews.
- Incumbent should work effectively with the Chamber of Mines to ensure that we can lobby as a united voice for the mining industry.
- Assist with tax audits, objections and appeals as well as dispute resolution with the Revenue Authorities.
- Work closely with the site Environmental department to drive regulatory compliance in environmental matters including engagement with ZEMA, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment
- Work closely with the site Community department to drive effective community engagement in line with Barrick’s DNA.
- Work closely with the site mining, HME and process departments to drive regulatory compliance and ensure that all licensing is current and up to date.
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 Certificate
- Degree in professional accounting/legal qualification or equivalent.
- CA certification is preferred but having a diploma or master’s in taxation is also advantageous.
- Must have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in taxation with either a “Big 4” public accounting or a large multinational corporation tax and with extensive experience in tax planning and managing audits and disputes with ZRA.
- Experience in mining industry is preferred.
- Experience in general statutory regulatory matters is preferred
