Job description

The Civil Engineer will be responsible for designing, managing, and overseeing civil engineering projects related to mining infrastructure at Zambia Gold Company Ltd. This includes ensuring the successful construction of tailings dams, roads, water management systems, and other critical infrastructure to support gold mining operations. The Civil Engineer will work closely with other departments to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities:

Process Optimization & Improvement:

  • Oversee and monitor gold extraction processes such as milling, leaching, flotation, and smelting to ensure efficiency and high recovery rates.
  • Develop, implement, and optimize metallurgical processes to enhance recovery, reduce operational costs, and minimize waste.
  • Conduct regular metallurgical test work, analyze results, and recommend process improvements.
  • Collaborate with the plant team to resolve any technical issues related to metallurgical operations.

Quality Control & Assurance:

  • Monitor the quality of ores and the effectiveness of processing techniques to maintain consistent product quality.
  • Ensure that metallurgical processes meet established quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct routine inspections and audits of the processing plant to ensure equipment is functioning efficiently and processes are adhered to.

Data Analysis & Reporting:

  • Analyse data related to production, efficiency, and process control, and generate detailed reports on performance.
  • Provide regular updates on metallurgical performance, highlighting areas for improvement.
  • Use statistical analysis and process control tools to evaluate and improve process performance.

Research & Development:

  • Lead initiatives in research and development to improve the overall metallurgical process, particularly in gold recovery, environmental sustainability, and cost efficiency.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, technological advancements, and new methodologies in metallurgy and incorporate relevant practices into the company’s operations.

Environmental & Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure that all metallurgical processes comply with Zambian environmental regulations, especially in waste management and chemical usage.
  • Promote a culture of safety within the processing plant, ensuring adherence to health and safety standards.
  • Support initiatives to reduce environmental impact, such as reducing emissions and managing hazardous materials safely.

Team Collaboration & Training:

  • Work closely with mining, engineering, and operational teams to ensure that metallurgical goals align with the broader company objectives.
  • Train and mentor junior metallurgists, plant operators, and other relevant staff on metallurgical practices, process control, and safety protocols.

Project Management:

  • Lead metallurgical projects aimed at improving recovery rates, reducing energy consumption, and increasing production efficiency.
  • Oversee the commissioning of new metallurgical equipment and processes, ensuring smooth integration into the current production system.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in civil engineering, with a focus on infrastructure projects in mining, construction, or industrial settings.
  • Registered member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) with valid subscription.
  • Experience with design and construction of tailings storage facilities, roads, drainage systems, and other infrastructure in mining or industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction management, and project planning.
  • Familiarity with relevant Zambian regulations and international standards related to mining infrastructure and environmental compliance.

Skill Specifications:

  • Proficient in using civil engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and equipment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations in the mining industry.
